What Are The Different Types of Massages?

If you’re new to world of massage and self-care you may find yourself questioning what massage style is right for you. In today’s blog post we break down all the different types of massages we offer so that you can find your perfect treatment!

Swedish Massage

Swedish style massages are among the most popular and widely available massages. Swedish massages are based on anatomy principles and physiology unlike their Asian style counterparts. Therapists use a massage lotion or oil and start with general long strokes before moving on to problematic or troubled areas. Swedish massages are great for relaxation and provide full-body muscle relaxation.

Hot Stone Massage

This massage style incorporates hot (technically warm, they should never be uncomfortable to the touch) stones into the treatment. Massage therapists place the heated stones on specific parts of the body or use for some strokes while giving the massage. The heat allows tight muscles to loosen and can be considered extra relaxing since they so easily counteract muscle tension buildup.

It is worth noting that if you have high blood pressure, heart disease, or diabetes you should check with your primary care physician before getting a hot stone massage.

Deep Tissue Massage

This massage type is focused on deep movements that target muscle adhesions or knots in specific target areas. It addresses the deeper layers of muscles and connective tissues and is great for those who have chronic pain or lingering injuries. Deep tissue massages use slow strokes across a muscle to trigger areas of tightness or discomfort. While deep tissue massages are generally more firm than their Swedish massage counterparts, they should never be painful.

Prenatal Massage

This massage type is essentially what its name describes, pregnancy massage. Our massage therapists attend additional training to ensure that they help alleviate an expecting mother’s pain while providing a safe experience for both mom and baby. Many moms to be experience lower back pain or swelling of the feet and ankles and a pregnancy massage can be a great way to get some relief and self-care incorporated into their pre-baby routine. Pregnancy massage differs from other massage types as modifications are made throughout the service to keep the mother comfortable. Certain treatment areas or techniques that may be included with a Swedish or Deep Tissue massage may also be avoided for safety. A perfect gift for any expecting mother, our prenatal massages are sure to be the hit of any baby shower!
